| My
grandfather was named Bruno Bancheiri and played the accordion in Italy.
He came to America early in the 20th century as a tailor. He moved to
Hollywood, California and became a "tailor to the stars" in the 30's and
40's, married and had a daughter (my mom) Rena.
As a child in the 50's our family used to travel to Hollywood to
visit grandpa Bruno and I became interested in the accordion during one
of the parties he used to host. Bruno (who also made his own vino) would
invite other musicians over for the feast. There was a full sized vine
covered Bocce ball court with lights, and once the games were finished
the vino would be poured and the music would begin.
I became enamored with the accordion at age 8 and played until age 12
and then quit for over 35 years. I have since taken it back up with
excitement since late 1999 while feeling it is the best thing I have
done for myself in years. The most influential figure in my return to
the accordion is easily Frank Marocco. His qualities as a musician and
as a positive role model for accordionists everywhere has been truly
inspirational for me.
Currently, I am still a fulltime Alfa Romeo mechanic with a one man
shop since 1973. My 'other' pastime is playing tournament racquetball,
something I have pursued since 1979.
